Communications Skills for Researchers

About the Course:

This session provides insights into how researchers can better communicate with bosses, clients, investors, patent lawyers, and the media. The importance of key sentences, headlines and analogies are discussed. Recommendations as far as which personal pronouns are best to use in communicating are provided. The speaker imparts advice relative to the simplicity of the message and the wisdom of avoiding jargon and acronyms.

Also, discussed are best practices for writing and issuing press releases. These issues include the timing of press releases, the selection of media outlets and the propriety of cover letters.

Examples of convoluted and confusing techno-babble translated into understandable vernacular are provided.

Course Leader: Robert P. Baker

Robert P. (Bob) Baker is a professional writer with a B.S. in Chemistry and over 30 years of experience in the Chemicals, Plastics, Construction, Manufacturing, Processing and Services Industries. Having worked for a number of advertising agencies, both large and small, on blue chip accounts like Du Pont, Eastman Chemical, Arco Chemical, AMP, Hoechst Celanese, GAF Corporation and Exxon Chemical, his experience is both deep and broad.

Company newsletters are one of Bob's specialties. He currently does several for clients ranging from an attorney who would like his clients to consult with him earlier before small problems become larger ones to a PhD Chemist whose company synthesizes biomarkers that enable the detection of tumors too small to be detected even by advanced techniques such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) Scan.
